 Richard Looney-Gap Rating 910 Richard Carl Looney was born on 14th February 14 in the Methodist parsonage at Hillsville, Virginia, USA.Bishop Richard Looney is presently serving as the President of The Foundation for Evangelism. The Foundation for Evangelism is an affiliate of the General Board of Discipleship of The United Methodist Church with offices located at Lake Junaluska, NC. It sponsors 13 ministries in evangelism including eleven Professors of Evangelism in seminaries in the United States, Germany and Africa.
Bishop Looney served as the Episcopal leader of the South Georgia Area for 12 years prior to his retirement in August 2000. His election as Bishop came in the year 1988 at the Southeastern Jurisdictional Conference. His past general church responsibilities included president of the General Council on Finance and Administration, president of the College of Bishops, president of the SEJ Administrative Council, member of the Joint Commission for Dialogue between the World Methodist Council and the Roman Catholic Church, member of the General Board of Church and member Society and the General Council on Ministries. Pulpit exchanges have been enjoyed in England and Australia and work missions shared in Peru, Liberia and Sierra Leone.
He received his Bachelor of Arts degree from Emory and Henry College and his Bachelor of Divinity degree from the Candler School of Theology at Emory University with additional study at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland and Union Theological Seminary in Richmond, Virginia. He was ordained an elder in the Holston Conference in 1959 by Bishop Roy H. Short. Appointments included: the Rising Fawn Circuit, Rising Fawn, Georgia; Baker's Chapel-Wyndale, Abington, Virginia; Pleasant View (formerly Baker's Chapel), Abington, Virginia; in Tennessee: White Oak, Chattanooga, Broad Street in Cleveland, the Chattanooga District, Munsey Memorial in Johnson City and Church Street in Knoxville.
Looney is married to the former Carolyn McKeithen of Jackson, Mississippi, and they have two sons, a daughter and four grandchildren. Hobbies include music, sports, hiking and travel. |
